The dasha system

    The dasha system
The Dasha System helps in analysing the problems and tells us as to when good or bad effects as reflected in the Birth Chart are to be experienced by the native. When the timings of benefic planets are in operation the native is blessed with all possible good events and enjoys powers and privileges. But when timings of malefic's planets are in operation evil results are experienced resulting in struggles, Strife's and sufferings.
The cycle of fortune and misfortune can be calculated and timed accordingly from the position of planets in the Birth Chart. These timings of good or bad events are known as Planetary operating periods or are called Mahadasha or Major periods. These major periods are subject to sub-divided periods known as Antar Dasha. Pratyantar Dasha. Sooksham Dasha and Prana Dasha which can be calculated up to hours, minutes, seconds and swara also. This becomes the basis of predictions in Hindu Astrology. Western Astrology does not have such a system. They do it by the movement of Sun and progression method.
Span of life is taken as 120 years and is distributed amongst nine planets.
    HOW DASHA STARTS
There are 27 Nakshtras - Each planet rules a group of 3 Nakshtras. The Moon at the time of birth will be passing through these Nakshtras. The first Dasha will be of the planet which is the ruler of the Nakshtra through which the Moon is passing at the time of birth. The rest in the regular order (Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury)
The text says that persons form between New Moon and the Full Moon or in Shukla Paksha should follow Vimshottri Dasa and those born in Krishna Paksha should follow Ashtottri Dasa. Thinkers are of the view that Vimshottari Dasa is supreme and recom- mended to be followed irrespective of the position of Moon.

    DASHA PERIODS
    Calculations - process
    Calculations of sub periods.
Good/Bad results expected from a planet during its Major Period and Sub Periods depends on:
    a) The House, the planet owns; (own sign)
    b) The house, the planet is posted in;
    c) The Rashi (sign), where planet is posted.
    d) The house it aspects;
    e) The Planet it is in conjunction with
These are subject to modifications. So the nature of the result, good or bad, depends on its being strong and benefic/Weak and malefic. Judge the planet for its results for which it is Karaka. If a planet is well placed in a good house/Rashi associated with benefic planets it can give good results. Placed in evil sign, evil house conjunction or aspected by malefic planet will indicate evil results or the matters signified by it.
Results also depend on the status and social environment of the native. Where predictions are being given; (Desh, Kaal, Paatra). A naturally benefic planet if owns a good house like Trikon then it becomes fully benefic. when it owns malefic houses like 6, 8, and 12 will act as both benefic and malefic (2,12)

Parivartana Yoga VEDIC ASTROLOGY

    What is Parivartana Yoga?
Presence of auspicious yogas in the birth chart makes it powerful. Besides Raj Yoga and Dhan Yoga, there are other auspicious yogas that help make the birth chart strong. When auspicious houses form a relationship with the other auspicious houses through auspicious yogas, it gives auspicious and favorable results. Apart from Trine and Kendra, there are Trik and Upachay houses in which Parivartana Yoga is formed.
The auspicious yoga which is created in the birth chart due to change in position or sign is Mahabhagya Yoga. These yogas are created due to the change of position of the lords of Kendra and Trine house. Due to the relationship of Kendra and Trine in this yoga, the person gets auspicious results during the Mahadasha-Antardasha of the lord of these houses.
We can clearly understand it through an example: If Sun is in the sign in Ascendant house of the Cancer Ascendant and Moon in Leo then Parivartana Yoga is created in the birth chart.
Following are the yogas created with change in position of lords (Sthan Parivartan):
    • 1. Analysing the Parivartan yoga through the transit of planets.
    • 2. Rashi Parivartan Yoga in auspicious or inauspicious planets.
    • 3. Rashi Parivartan Yoga in both the auspicious yogas.
    • 4. Parivartan Yoga in exalted or debilitated planets.
    • 5. Parivartan Yoga in friendly or enemy sign.
    • 6. Parivartan Yoga in the karak planets of RajYoga.
    • 7. Parivartan yoga in debilitated and retrograde planets.
There are three kinds of parivartana yogas
    • 1 .Dainya Yoga
    • 2 .Mabhagya Yoga or Maha Yoga
    • 3 .Kahala Yoga
What is Dainya Yoga? What are effects of Denya Yoga
There are total 30 types of Dainya Yoga. This Yoga  is created when sixth, eighth and twelfth house change their place to Kendra and Trine house.
    Results of Dainya Yoga
Due to the relationship of Dainya Yoga with sixth, eighth, eleventh and twelfth house, it has been categorized under inauspicious yogas. As its name suggests, this yoga affects the wealth of the person.
Due to Dainya Yoga, the person may not able to make the best use of his ability in his work. The person easily gets inclined towards immoral practices. His enemies also try to cause trouble to him. The person of Dainya Yoga should be soft-spoken and maintains discipline.
    Mahabhagya Yoga and its effects
Mahabhagya Yoga is one of the yogas created due to the change in position of the sign. Mahabhagya Yoga helps increase the fame, wealth and leads the person towards success in his life. They are of 28 types.
Mahabhagya Yoga  is created in Kendra, trine and eleventh house due to the change of position of the sign. Therefore this yoga is created in the fifth, seventh, ninth, tenth, Ascendant and eleventh house due
to the change of position of sign.
    Results of Mahabhagya Yoga
The person who has Mahabhagya Yoga in his birth chart is blessed by goddess Lakshmi. His wealth continues to increase and he gets the opportunity to work on a higher position. He lives a luxurious life and gets expensive jewellery and clothes. This yoga also helps increase the prosperity, material pleasures and comfort of expensive cars and other vehicles.
Kahala Yoga and Effects of Kahala Yoga
Another yoga created due to the change of place is Kahala Yoga. If the lord of the third house changes its place to Ascendant, Second and fourth house, the Kahala Yoga is created. The meaning of Khal is evil. As its name suggests it diverts the person from moral to immoral activities.
    Results of Kahala Yoga

LEARNING ASTROLOGY IN SIMPLE WAY

Nature of Planets
Analysis of a horoscopic chartrequires a thorough understanding of the nature of planets. It is on the basis of a proper knowledge of the nature of planets that good and bad results can be predicted with any accuracy. Before venturing into predictive aspect of astrology, it is imperative on the part of a practitioner of astrology to spend some time mastering the principles that govern the benevolence and malevolence of planets.

Planets may be benefic or malefic by nature. Or they become benefic or malefic depending uopn the nature of the rising sign in a horoscope. Benefic and malefic planets produce their results when their appropriate dashas operate. Dashas thus help us in the timing of events.

The nature of various planets is determined on the basis of standard astrological principles mentioned by the classical writers.

The following account is primarily a reproduction of the same principles.
Malefics and Benefics by nature
Planets may be malefic or benefic depending upon their inherent nature. Thus, Jupiter, Venus, waxing Moon and well-associated Mercury are natural benefics. Similarly, the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, waning Moon and afflicted Mercury are natural malefics. The Moon though a mild and benevolent planet, behaves as a malefic when too close to the Sun. Mercury gets influenced too easily; it thus behaves as a benefic under benefic influence and as a malefic under malefic influence. Rahu and Ketu too can behave as benefics especially when placed in the signs of Jupiter and Mercury.
Benefics and Malefics for different Lagnas
Parashara's Principles
Planets behave as benefics and malefics depending on the houses they own. The ownership would naturally vary from one lagna to the other. In other words, for a give lagna, certain planets will behave as a benefics while others will behave as malefics or neutrals. This will be independant of their inherent nature. Planets thus are subservient to the lagna. On the basis of the principles discussed hereunder, a natural benefic may assume the role of a malefic while a natural malefic may assume a benefic role.
Principles - Part I

(a) Natural benefics as lords of quadrants (houses 1,4, 7 and 10) shed their beneficence.

(b) Natural malefics as lords of quadrants shed their malefics nature.

Note
:

(1) Natural benefics are the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus; natural malefics are the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.

(2) Lordship of quadrants has a neutralising influence on the nature of planets. The natural benefics thus lose the capacity to give benefic results, while the natural malefics lose their capacity to do harm.

(3)Only the ownership of quadrants does not convert benefics into malefics, and vice versa.

(c) Lords of trines (houses 1, 5 and 9) give benefic results no matter whether by their inherent nature they are benefics or malefics.

Note : Lord of the lagna is both the lord of a quadrant and a trine. it is thus supposed to give benefic results irrespective of it's inherent nature.

(d) Lords of the third, the sixth and the eleventh houses are always malefic.

(e) Lords of the second, the eighth and the twelfth houses behave as neutrals. They give results according to their location as well as association.

Note : Lords of the 2nd, 8th and 12th houses are impressionable neutrals.
Principles - Part II

The twelve houses in a horoscope have been divided into four groups above : (a) the quadrants; (b) the trines; (c) the 3, 6, 11 group; and (d) the 2, 8,12 group. In each group the relative strength of the various house lords is described thus

(a) Of the lords of the quadrants, the 4th lord is more powerful than the lagna lord; the 7th lord is more powerful than the 4th lord; and the 10th lord is more powerful than the 7th lord.

(b) Of the trine lords, the 5th lord is more powerful than the lagna lord, while the 9th lord is more powerful than the 5th lord.

(c) Of the 3, 6, 11 group, the sixth lord is more powerful than the 3rd lord while the 11th lord is more so than the 6th lord.

(d) Of the 2, 8, 12 group, the 12th lord is more powerful than the 2nd, while the 8th lord is more so than the 12th.
Principles - Part III

The lord of the 8th house, though considered a neutral, has a special propensity to do evil. The eighth house represents obstructions, obstacles, failures, intrigues, ailments, death and the like. The following points must be remembered while considering the 8th house.

(a) Eighth house is the 12th from 9th (indicating loss of Bhagya); hence its lord ie ever malefic.

Note :
(i) 12th house from lagna indicates loss. 12th house from any house indicates loss of that house. Since the 9th house stands for Bhagya (luck), virtues, pious deeds, religious inclinations, father, etc., the 12th from it (i.e., the 8th) indicates the loss of all these. Loss of fortune or luck is considered the biggest loss.

(ii) When the 8th lord is also lagna lord, the benefic nature of the lagna lordship prevails, and the 8th lord tends to behave as a benefic unless it is particularly afflicted or ill placed.

(b) The 8th lord is still more malefic when it also lords over the 3rd or the 11th house.

Note :
(i) For Pisces ascendant, Venus is the lord of the third and the 8th houses and is bad.

(ii) For Virgo ascendant, Mars is the lord of the third and the eighth houses and, therefore, adverse.

(iii) For Taurus ascendant, Jupiter is the lord of the 8th and the 11th houses, and is adverse.

(iv) For Scorpio ascendant, Mercury as the lord of the 8th and the 11th houses is bad

(c) The eighth lord becomes a benefic when it also owns a trine.

Note :
(i) Jupiter and Mercury for Leo and Aquarius ascendants respectively own the 5th and 8th houses, and behave as benefics.

(ii) For Gemini ascendant, Saturn as the lord of the 8th house as well as the 9th house (a trine) does not become an outright benefic, and, according to the Bhavartha Ratnakara, gives mixed results only.

(d) The evil effects of the 8th house lordship do not apply to the Sun or the Moon.

Note : The Moon is the 8th lord for Sagttarius ascendant, and the Sun for Capricorn ascendant. According to the sage Parashara, the Sun and the Moon remain un-afflicted by the 8th house lordship. This, however, may not hold true in actual practice, at least in medical astrology.
Principles - Part IV

(a) When a planet owns both a quadrant and a trine, it becomes particularly useful and is called a Raja-yoga-karaka (doer of great benefit). It gives additional benefit if it is also located in a quadrant or a trine.

Note :
(i) Mars for Cancer and Leo ascendants, Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius ascendants, and Saturn for Taurus and Libra ascendants, become Yoga-karakas because of the ownership of a trine and a quadrant.

(ii) Some people doubt the efficacy of Saturn as a benefic for Taurus ascendant despite its ownership of the 9th and the 10th houses (a trine and a quadrant respectively). This is because the 9th lord is considered a Badhaka (an obstructing agent) for a fixed lagna like Taurus. This , however, is not the view of Parashara which is more authentic.

(b) Only the ownership of a quadrant does not convert a malefic into a benefic. The malefic must also own a trine to completely shed its malevolence.

Note : Saturn, as the lord of the 10th and the 11th houses for Aries ascendant, as lord of the 3rd and the 4th houses for Scorpio ascendant, and as the lord of the 6th and the 7th houses for Leo ascendant, remains a malefic despite owning a quadrant in each case.

(c) The blemish of kendra lordship (ownership of quadrants), as applicable to benefics, increases progressively from the Moon, to Mercury, to Jupiter, to Venus.

(d) Full Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus, in this order, are progressively more powerful as benefics.

(e) Waning Moon, the Sun, Saturn and Mars, in this order, are progressively more powerful as malefics.
Principles - Part V (Raja Yogas)

When the lord of a quadrant is in some way related to the lord of a trine, a Raja Yoga (or a highly benefic combination) is formed. Benefic combinations in a horoscope neutralise affliction and are good for remaining free from disease. Relationship between any two house lords can be in one of the following ways :

(a) By location in the same house (conjunction).

(b) By mutual aspect.

(c) By an exchange of houses (Parivartana Yoga).

(d) When one of them is placed in the other's house and this latter aspects the former.

Note : When the lords of quadrants and trines are related in one of the ways indicated above, they still do not produce a Raja yoga if they also own the Papasthanas (adverse houses), i.e., houses 3, 6 and 11.
Principles - Part VI (Rahu and Ketu)

(a) Rahu and Ketu give results according to the house where they are located, and according to the planet (i.e., the lord of a house) whom they join.

(b)Rahu and Ketu become Yogakarakas (productive of Raja Yoga) in the following situations :

(i) When they are placed in a quadrant, and join a trine lord; or

(ii) When they are placed in a trine, and join a quadrant lord.

(c) Rahu also behaves as Saturn and Ketu also as Mars.
Trik Houses and their Lords
Houses 6, 8 and 12 are known as Trik houses. While these houses, their lords, as well as the planets that associate with these houses and their lords are productive of adverse results, they are particularly adverse in relation to health. The sixth house and the sixth lord, among other things, indicate disease and accidents. The eighth house and the eighth lord indicate chronic disease, incurable disease, or death. The twelfth house and its lord indicate suffering and also hospitalisation. The dasha periods of the planets associated with these houses and their lords must be carefully watched for determining illness.

The Double Transit Phenomenon

With this understanding, it becomes possible to see that when Jupiter and Saturn both aspect a sign by transit it becomes a significant event. That sign becomes strongly activated by both the expansive influence of Jupiter and the actualizing influence of Saturn. The otherwise potentially limiting and challenging qualities of Saturn’s transit become wise and more beneficial under Jupiter’s influence. While the potentially unrealistic and ungrounded qualities of Jupiter’s transit become more practical and focused under Saturn’s influence. Together they can indicate achievement, breakthroughs, and progress regarding the areas of life that are signified by the house(s) that they’re both aspecting by transit.
It’s very helpful to get into the habit of looking for which house(s) Saturn and Jupiter are both aspecting by transits at any given time. Oddly, many astrologers overlook this simple method and can miss valuable insights into where the individual needs to focus his or her energy during that time period.
It must be noted that while this can sound reliable and promising, in Vedic astrology the yogas (combinations of planets) and dashas (predictive systems) need to be considered. If we rely only on transits to produce results, even the double transit, we may be disappointed. If the progress and achievements that the double transit indicates don't have the support of the yogas and dashas they will not come to full fruition. It may, however, indicate an area of focus in a person's life. For this reason, it's helpful to follow the double transits even without knowledge of the yogas and dashas.

The Special Aspects of Jupiter and Saturn

How do we know where Jupiter and Saturn are aspecting by their transits? The aspects are very different in Vedic astrology than Western astrology. Every planet aspects both the house it’s located in and the 7th house from itself – 1st and 7th aspects. In addition, there are special aspects for Jupiter, Saturn and Mars. Jupiter also aspects the 5th and 9th; Saturn also aspects the 3rd and 10th; and Mars also aspects the 4th and the 8th houses. So both Jupiter and Saturn will aspect a total of 4 houses including the one they’re placed in. The overlapping house(s) represents the double transit.

Examples of the Double Transit

In the following example we see the double transit in the sign of Pisces, which occurred between July 24th, 2002 and July 30th, 2003. Saturn was transiting Gemini and aspecting Leo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Jupiter was transiting Cancer and aspecting Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces. Therefore, the only sign that received the aspect of both planets was Pisces. (However, between January 9th and April 8th, 2003 Saturn went retrograde back into Taurus, thereby shifting the double transit to the signs of Cancer and Scorpio.)

Whatever house Pisces represents for each rising sign will determine how the double transit will affect the chart. For instance, for Gemini Ascendant Pisces is the 10th house. The double transit will, therefore, indicate potential expansion and actualization of career achievements.
Transits of Jupiter and Saturn

What you’ll see in the following illustrations is how the sign(s) that gets the double transit will shift, generally from year to year. In fact, there are only two positions of Jupiter and Saturn that will not have the double transit phenomenon – when Jupiter is in the 8th or 12th house from Saturn. This means that 10 out of the 12 possible positions, or more than 80% of the time, there will be the double transit phenomenon happening in at least one sign, possibly two.

In the next example the double transit shifts from Pisces into Leo and Sagittarius, which occurred between July 30th 2003 and August 28th 2004. I saw a client with Gemini rising on July 17th, 2003 and he was talking about how his focus was beginning to shift away from his career and into his 5-year relationship that had serious issues that needed to be resolved. He also expressed an interest in learning web design, which relates to the 3rd house of communication and the media. With Gemini rising, the double transit was shifting out of his 10th house of career (Pisces), and into his 7th house of relationship (Sagittarius) and 3rd house of communications (Leo).
The dashas also indicated this shift for him as he was moving into a Ketu period and Ketu was placed in his 7th house of relationship. Ketu as a natural malefic represents possible separation during its dasha especially if it has an influence on the 7th house, 7th lord or Venus. Ketu also represents introversion, detachment and is less career focused by nature.
I had another client on August 12, 2003 with Cancer rising who had traveled to Thailand while the double transit was in his 9th house of long distance travel in Pisces. He was talking about his financial and health concerns since returning from the trip. The double transit had just shifted from his 9th house to his 6th house of health and disease as well as the 2nd house of money. He also was in the process of changing employment (6th house), and finding new ways to earn money (2nd house).
Transits of Jupiter and Saturn
The double transit in Leo and Sagittarius
In the last example the double transit shifts into Virgo and Capricorn with the transits of Jupiter into Virgo and Saturn into Cancer. This occurs between September 6th, 2004 and September 27th, 2005. (However, on January 14th, 2005 Saturn retrogrades back into Gemini for 4 ½ months until May 27th during which time the double transit will be in Pisces.)

Applying the Double Transit

Besides considering the dashas and yogas as previously mentioned, it's also important to see the relative strengths of Jupiter and Saturn in your natal chart. This can be done by seeing their sign and house placement, their house rulership, as well as the planets that aspect them. This will modify the relative strength of their transits.
Also, look to see which house(s), if any, are also doubly aspected by Jupiter and Saturn in the natal chart. This house will gain prominence throughout their life. Also, when the double transit aspects to this house expect intensified results. Lastly, if you know the ashtakavarga point system examine how many points Jupiter and Saturn’s points are both in the natal chart and in their transiting sign. If they are higher than 5 points then their results will be more beneficial. If they are less than 2 points then their results will be less beneficial. All these factors will modify the relative strength of the double transit.
The following is a brief list of house indications so that you can begin to examine the double transit shifts in the charts you examine. You will find that major events often occur at the time of the double transit. For instance, childbirth, marriage, inheritance, career expansion, will occur when the double transit is in the 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th house etc. If this is not the case then it can often be traced to the fact that the yogas and dashas do not support the event.
