Naming the Baby

Namakarana

According to the general rule of the Gruhyasutras the Namakarana ceremony was performed on the tenth or the twelfth day after the birth of the child with the single exception of the secret name which was given, in the opinion of some, on the birth day. But the later options range from the tenth up to the first day of the second year. One authority says, "The naming ceremony should be performed on the tenth, twelfth, hundredth day or at the expiry of the first year." This wide option was due to the convenience of the family and health of the mother and the child. But the option from the tenth up to thirty second day was due to the different periods of ceremonial impurities prescribed for different casts. In the opinion of Brihaspati, "The naming ceremonies should be performed on the tenth, twelfth, thirteenth, sixteenth, nineteenth, or thirty-second day after the birth of the child." But according to astrological works even these dates were to be postponed if there was any natural abnormality or lack of religious propriety. "If there be a Samkranti (the passage of the sun from one zodiac to another), and eclipse or sraddha, the ceremony cannot be auspicious." There were other prohibited days also which should be avoided.

At the expiry of impurity caused by birth, the house was washed and purified, and the child and mother bathed. Before the proper ceremony, the preliminary rites were performed. Then the mother, having covered the child with pure cloth and wetted its head with water, handed it over to the father. After this, offerings were made to Prajapati, date, constellation, their deities, Agni and Soma. The father touched the breaths of the child, most probably, to awaken its consciousness and to draw its attention towards the ceremony. Then the name was given. How it was done is not described in the Gruhyasutras, but the Paddhatis contain the following procedure.

After preliminaries, the parents give the offerings to gods and feel the breath of the child symbolising the awakening of its consciousness and utters in its ear three times: "Your name is …..". The Brahmins and elders are asked to follow, calling the child by that name and blessing it.

The parents, Acharya (teacher) etc. give name to the child. It is written in the Gobhiliya 2/8/8-18 and the Shaunaka Grihya Sutra that a meritoriously attractive and pleasant name should be given to the child.

Composition of the Name:

The first question which has been discussed from the time of the Gruhyasutras onwards is the composition of the name. According to the Paraskara Gruhyasutra, the name should be of two syllables or of four syllables, beginning with a sonant, with a semivowel in it, with the long vowel or the visarga at its end, with a Krt suffix, not with a Taddhita. In the opinion of Baijavapa there is no restriction of syllables. "The father should give a name to the child containing one syllable, two syllables, three syllables, or an indefinite number of syllables." But Vasistha restricts the number to two or four syllables and asks to avoid names ending in l and r. the Asvalayana Gruhyasutra attaches different kinds of merits to different number of syllables; "One who is desirous of fame, his name should consists of two syllables, one who desires holy lustre, his name should contain four syllables." For boys even number of syllables were prescribed.

Naming a Girl:

The naming of a girl had a different basis. The name of a girl should contain an uneven number of syllables, it should end in a and should have a Taddhita. Baijavapa says, "The name of a girl should contain three syllables and end in i." Manu gives further qualifications of the name of a girl: "It should be easy to pronounce, not hard to hear, of clear meaning, charming, auspicious, ending in a long vowel and containing some blessing." She should not be given an awkward name indicating "a constellation, a tree, a river, a mountain, a bird, a servant, and a terror." Manu forbids to marry girls who were named after these objects. The most probable reason seems to be that such names were current in the non Aryan peoples with whom the Aryans were not willing to form matrimonial relations.

Fourfold Naming:

There was current fourfold naming, according to asterism under which the child was born, the deity of the month, the family deity, and the popular calling.

Nakshtra Name

To begin with the Nakshtra name, it was a name derived from the name of a Nakshtra (a lunar asterism) under which the child was born, or from its presiding deity. Sankha and Likhita prescribed that, "the father or an elderly member of the family should give the child a name connected with the constellation under which the child is born." The following are the names of the constellations and their deities:

If a child was born under the constellation Asvini, he was named Asvinikumara, if under Rhini, Rohinikumara etc. Another method of naming the child after the constellation was also current. The letters of the Sanskrit alphabets are believed to be presided over by different constellations. But as there are fifty two letters and only twenty seven constellations, each constellation has more than one letter under its influence. The first letter of the child´s name should begin with one of the letters ruled over by a particular asterism. A child who was born under Asvini, which presides over the letters Chu - Che - Cho - la was named Chudamani, Chedisa, Cholesa or Lakshmana according to the different steps of the constellations.

According to Baudhayana, the name derived from the constellation was kept secret. It was the second name for greeting the elders and was known to the parents only up to the time of the Upanayana. In the opinion of some authorities the secret name was given on the birth day. About the greeting name Asvalayana also says that it should be selected on the naming day and should be known to the parents only. Saunaka is of the same opinion, "The name by which he should greet the elders after being initiated, should be given to him. Having thought over it, the father should pronounce it closely to the child so that others may not know it. The parents should recollect this name at the time of initiation." The name derived form the Nakshatra was vitally connected with the life of the individual. So it was kept secret less enemies may do mischief to the man through it.

Name according to akshara corresponding to nakshatra:

Each naksatra is divided into four equal parts. Each part is assigned a syllable. After determining which nakshatra and which quarter of the nakshatra that the child was born in, a name shoul be chosen which begins with syllable corresponding to the particular quarter of the nakshatra. Any syllable with an "o" sound may substitute an "au" sound. An syllable with an "e" sound may substitute an "ai" sound. "S" may be substituted for "s".

Name after Month deity

The second mode of naming was based on the deity of the month in which the child was born. According to Gargya, the names of the deities of months beginning from Margasirsa are Karnna, Ananta, Achyuta, Chakri, Vaikuntha, Janardana, Upendra, Yjnapurusa, Vasudeva, hari, Yogisa, and Pundarikaksa. The child was given a second name connected with the deity of the month. The above names are all of Vaisnava sect and they originated much later than the sutra period.

Name after Family deity

The third name was given according to the family deity. A family deity was a god or goddess worshipped in a family or tribe from every early times. The people naming a child after it thought that the child would enjoy special protection of the deity. The deity may be Vedic e.g. Indra, Soma, varuna, Mitra, Prajapati, or Puranic e.g. Krishna, rama, Sankara, Ganesa etc. While naming the child, the word Dasa or Bhakta (a devotee) was added to the name of the deity.

Popular Name

The last mode of naming was popular.The formation of this name mainly depended on the culture and education of the family.

Forbidden or prohibited names

The following female names should be avoided.

Names after a constellation such as Rohini, Revati etc. should be avoided. Names of trees and plants such as Champa, Tulasi etc., Names of rivers such as Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati etc. Names formed on the basis of lowering merit like Chandali

Names of mountains like Vindhyachal, Himalaya,etc.,Names of birds like Kokila, Hansa etc., Names of snakes such as Sarpini, Nagin, etc

Names suggestive of menial servants or other orderlies like Dasi, kinkakari etc., Names that create an awe or fear like Bheema, Bhayankari, Chandika etc.,. The above types of names are prohibited names for female children.

The scriptural authority for the above prohibitions is taken from Manu Smriti 3/9. Which reads as follows:

"Let him not marry a maiden named after a constellation, a tree, or a river, nor one bearing the name of a low caste, or of a mountain, nor one named after a bird, a snake, or a slave, nor one whose name inspires terror."

If the child is female, the name should be of one or three or five letters like Shree, Hrihi, Yashoda, Sukhada, Saubhagyaprada etc. According to Asvalayana, the names of boys should have an even number of syllables. A two-syllable name will bring material prosperity and fame and a four syllable name will bring religious fame.

INDIAN VEDIC ASTROLOGY Astrologically, yoga refers to the planetary combinations and their special results, which affect the life of an individual. AMAR YOGA An auspicious planetary combination formed in two ways,(1) all cardinal houses occupied by all malefic, or by all benefices. Here, the native owns landed property and real estate, and in the latter case, he becomes rich and affluent; (2) Sun in Aries or in Leo occupies the Ascendant, or any other cardinal or trine house while Moon is in exaltation or in its own sign, i.e., in Cancer or Taurus, and Jupiter and Venus occupy the 8th or 12th house in the natal chart. This yoga nullifies all evils in the horoscope. AMARAK YOGA A planetary combination formed by the lord of the 7th house placed in the 9th house, and the lord of the 9th in the 7th house while both these planets are strong. It bestows to the native long arms, big eyes, knowledge of law and religious scriptures. His wife is faithful to him and he leads a pure and moral life. ANAPHA YOGA A planet other than the Sun occupying the 12th house from the Moon constitutes Anapha yoga. Mars in this position makes the person powerful, self-controlled and a leader of persons engaged in undesirable activities. Mercury makes him proficient in oratory, and absorbing conversations, and skilled in social arts. Jupiter makes the native a serious-minded, righteous person spending money on charity. Venus makes the person a womanizer yet respected by persons in authority. Saturn leads to disenchantment, and the nodes, to perversity. The Moon under the yoga bestows well-formed organs, good manners and self-respect. ARA SAURI YOGA Planetary combination between Saturn and Mars. It produces serious afflictions. ARDHA-CHANDRA YOGA A planetary combination under which all planets occupy consecutive houses leaving the intervening cardinal houses vacant. The individual under this combination is happy, handsome, and is provided with much ornaments, gems and jewels. ARISTHA YOGAS Planetary combinations producing misfortune. These combinations nullify auspicious results and produce hardships. After the age of fifteen years, they are granted favors by the state and elders. PAKSHIN YOGA A planetary combination produced by all planets in the 4th and 10th houses. PANCHA MAHAPURUSHA YOGA Planetary combinations formed by non-luminaries, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn in their own sign or in exaltation, occupying a cardinal house. Each of these nonluminaries forms the yoga singly, and each of them has a separate name and effect. Ruchaka yoga is formed by such a placement of Mars, Bhadra by Mercury, Hamsa by Jupiter, Malavya by Venus, and Sasa Yoga by Saturn. PARIVARTHANA YOGA This means exchange of mutual houses. Any two lords may exchange their houses. Of them when the lord of 9th, this can confer very good results. If the lords of 5 and 10 exchange or 7 and 10 exchange or 5 and 9 exchange very good results can be seen. Even when the lord of 10 is in 9 or 9 th in 10th this yoga is formed partially. Even in cases where the lord of 10th hag aspect of the lord of 5 or 9 this yoga can form to an extent. Ruchaka Yoga: Strong physique, well versed in ancient love, conforms to tradition and customs, and becomes famous. Such an individual also becomes wealthy, lives for long, and leads a group of men or an army. Bhadra Yoga: Strong physique with a lion-like face. The individual is helpful to relatives and attains a high intellectual eminence. Hamsa Yoga: A righteous person, graceful in appearance, considerate, devoted to gods and higher life, and ritualistic in religious observances. Malavya Yoga: Essentially a family person, preoccupied with domestic responsibilities and surrounded by children and grandchildren. He possesses personal vehicle, residential house, and other necessities of life. Sasa Yoga: Sensuous, occultist, leader of non-traditional and anti-social elements. Fearless and capable of performing arduous deeds. PAPAKARTRI YOGA Malefic planets flanking any house or a planet. It destroys the auspicious nature of the same and imparts malefic influence. The house or the planet thus afflicted does not prosper. PARIJATA YOGA A planetary combination related with the position of the Ascendant lord. If the lord of the sign where the Ascendant lord is situated, or if the lord of the navamsa where the lord of the sign in which the Ascendant lord is situated is placed in a cardinal or trine house, Parijata Yoga is formed. It makes the person born under it a sovereign, destined to be happy during the middle or the later part of his life. Such a person is respected by other kings. He is fond of wars, possesses immense wealth, is mindful of his duties towards the state, and is compassionate in disposition. PARIVRAJYA YOGA Planetary combination for asceticism. Some important ascetic yogas are as follows: (1) Four or more planets in strength occupying a single house with Raja Yoga present in the horoscope (2) The lord of Moon sign with no aspect on itself, aspects Saturn or Saturn aspects the lord of the sign occupied by Moon which is also weak (3) Moon occupies drekkana of Saturn and is expected by it. Such an individual renounces the world and mundane relationships (4) Moon occupies the navamsa of Saturn or Mars, and is expected by Saturn. Such a person is disenchanted with mundane existence and leads the life of a recluse (5) Jupiter, Moon and the Ascendant expected by Saturn, and Jupiter occupying the 9th house in the horoscope make a person born in Raja Yoga a holy and illustrious founder of a system of philosophy (6) Saturn unaccepted by a planet occupies the 9th House and there is Raja Yoga in the horoscope. The combination will make the individual enter a, holy order and become a lord of men. PARVAT YOGA Planetary combinations of this name are of two kinds. First, benefics in a cardinal house from Ascendant, and 6th and 8th houses either posited by benefics or vacant. Second, the Ascendant lord and the 12th house lord both in cardinal houses from each other, and expected by friendly planets. Persons born under these combinations are very fortunate, fond of learning different subjects, charitable and considerate. They become political or social leaders. They, however, have a great attraction for women. PASHA YOGA Individuals born under it earn much money and are very skilled, and respected. PRESHYA YOGAS Planetary combinations leading to servitude formed (1) when Sun is in the 10th house, Moon is in the 7th, Saturn in the 4th, Mars in the 3rd and the Ascendant is in a cardinal sign while Jupiter is placed in the 2nd house. (5) Lord of the 10th house while occupying its own or its exaltation sign aspects the Ascendant. (6) All the benefics occupy cardinal houses. (7) Debilitated lords of the 6th, 8th, and 12th houses aspect the Ascendant. (8) Any relationship between the lords of the 5th and 9th houses. (9) The association of the lords of the 5th, 10th, and 4th houses and Ascendant with the lord of the 9th house. (10) Lord of the 5th house in association with the lord of the 9th house or with the Ascendant lord in the 1st, 4th, or the 10th house. (11) Venus associated with Jupiter in the 9th house if it happens to be the sign of Sagittarius or Pisces, or with the lord of the 5th house. (12) Moon in the 3rd or 11th house, and Venus placed. in the 7th house from it. Many other benefic combinations such as Gaja Kesari Yoga, Pancha Maha Purusha Yoga and Lakshmi Yoga are also important Rajya Yogas. RAJAPADA YOGA An auspicious combination formed by Moon and Ascendant in Vargottama Navamsa, and four or more planets expecting them. It makes the individual head of a state or its equivalent. RAJJU YOGA A planetary combination formed by all planets in movable signs. The combination makes the individual born under it to settle in a foreign country. He is generally unjust and engages in illegal activities. RASATALA YOGA A planetary combination constituted by the lord of the 12th house in exaltation, and Venus posited in the 12th house and aspected by the lord of the 4th house. Persons born under it attain the status of head of state. They may find wealth buried under the earth. RAVI YOGA A combination of planets formed by Sun in the 10th house and the lord of the 10th house in 3rd house along with Saturn. It makes the individual born with this combination a Scientist who attains a powerful status in administration. He eats very little, is much occupied with his studies, and is greatly respected. REKHA YOGA A planetary combination leading to poverty. It arises when a weak lord of Ascendant is aspected by the lord of the 8th house, and Jupiter is combust by Sun. Alternatively, if the lord of Navamsa occupied by the lord of the 4th house is obscured by Sun while Sun itself is aspected by the lord of the 12th house. S SAKATA YOGA An inauspicious planetary combination described variously in classical texts. It is formed by all the planets in the 1st and 7th houses which make the individual accept low professions. It also occurs when Jupiter occupies the 6th or 8th position from Moon posited in a house other than the cardinal houses in relation with the Ascendant. It brings poverty even to those born in a royal family. Such a person is troubled throughout his life and is disliked by the head of the state. Moon in the 12th, 8th or 6th house from Jupiter causes Sakata Yoga unless Moon is situated in a cardinal house. A person with this combination loses his wealth or position in life, but regains them. Sakata Yoga produces cyclic fluctuation in fortune, just like the wheel of a chariot, rotating on its axis. SAMRAJYA YOGA A planetary combination formed by the lord of the Navamsa sign of the lord of the 9th house, along with Jupiter in the 2nd house. It makes the individual a top-ranking administrative officer living in luxury. SAMUDRA YOGA A planetary combination formed by all planets in even houses such as the 2nd, 4th, 6th, etc., while odd houses, such as the 1st, 3rd, etc., are vacant. It bestows much renown on the individual and he is provided with all conveniences of life. SANKHYA YOGA Depending upon the number of signs occupied by the seven planets Sankhya Yoga is formed. The different combinations formed by the number of houses occupied are given different names,(a) Vina Yoga (seven signs occupied); (b) Dama Yoga (six signs occupied); (c) Pasha Yoga (five signs occupied); (d) Kedar Yoga (four signs occupied); (e) Shula Yoga (three signs occupied); (f) Yuga Yoga (two signs occupied); and (g) Gola Yoga (one sign occupied). These combinations produce results when any other yoga formed by such combinations like Chap Yoga, Kshetri Yoga, Nav Yoga, etc. do not occur. SASA YOGA One of the Panch Maha Purusha Yogas. It is produced by a strong Saturn occupying a cardinal house while occupying its own or its exaltation sign. It makes the individual command many retinues. His libidinous proclivity is unbridled. He commands over a region. He is psychologically at a point where a radical transformation in his attitude is imminent; disenchantment with sex life could lead him towards spirituality. He may turn out to be a desire- less philanthropist. SHAKTI YOGA A planetary combination formed by all planets situated in the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th houses. It makes the individual lazy and devoid of wealth and happiness but he acquires great skill in arguing for criminal litigants. SHANKHA YOGA A planetary combination formed in 2 ways,(i) the lords of the 5th and 6th houses in cardinal houses from one another, while the Ascendant is strong, and (ii) the lords of the ascendant and the 10th house placed in movable signs while the lord of the 9th house is strong. These combinations make the individual born under them, well versed in scriptures, a man of principles and ethics, and engaged in laudable activities. Such individuals have a long life. SHAR YOGA A planetary combination formed by the placement of all planets in the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th houses. It makes the individual born under it cruel and related with prisons. SHARDA YOGA A planetary combination formed in two ways, (i) the lord of the 10th house posited in the 5th house, Mercury placed in a cardinal house, and Sun either in its own sign or in a very strong position, and (ii) Jupiter situated in a trine house from Moon, and Mars in a trine house from Mercury. Under these combinations, an individual becomes well behaved, dutiful, God-fearing and is honored by the state. V VASUMATI YOGA A planetary combination constituted by Venus, Jupiter and Mercury, provided Mercury is not associated with any malefic, in Upachaya house from Ascendant or with Moon. It produces possibilities for the individual to become a billionaire. VASI YOGA Planet in 12th to Sun this yoga is formed, Nmae and fame are indicated VESI YOGA A planet other than Moon occupying the 2nd house from Sun sign produces Vesi Yoga; a similar occupation in the 12th house leads to Vasi Yoga. When Sun sign is flanked by planets other than Moon on both sides, it produces Obhayachari Yoga. Persons born under Vesi Yoga are truthful, lazy, unbiased and rich. Vasi Yoga produces individuals skilled in many arts; they are charitable, strong, learned, renowned and glorious. VIBHAVASU YOGA A planetary combination formed by Mars either exalted or placed in the 10th house, exalted Sun in the 2nd house, and Moon along with Jupiter in the 9th house. It enables the individual born under the combination to get an adorable wife and lead a happy personal life. He will be rich and will occupy a high status in life. VIDYUTA YOGA A planetary combination formed by the lord of 11th house in exaltation along with Venus occupying a cardinal house in relation with the house occupied by the Ascendant lord. It makes the individual charitable, affluent, and enables him to occupy a high status in life. VISHNU YOGA A combination formed by the lords of the 9th and 10th houses as well as the lord of the Navamsa sign lord of the 9th posited in the 2nd house. It makes the individual favored in an important way by the state. By nature, he is patient, is erudite, skilled in debating and is an engaging conversationalist. He becomes rich and lives for long. Y YAV YOGA A planetary combination formed by all malefic in 1st and 7th houses and all benefics in 4th and 10th houses. It makes the individual courageous and his mid-span of life is very happy. YUGMA YOGA A planetary combination formed by the lord of the 4th in 9th along with some benefic and Jupiter expecting it. A person born under this combination receives valuable gifts from the state and from persons in authority, and leads a happy and affluent life. YUP YOGA A planetary combination formed by all planets in Ascendant, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th houses. It makes the individual religious, charitable, generous, and he performs many important rites.

Exaltation or Own Sign

Mars or Mercury or Jupiter or Venus or Saturn, any of these five planets in his own sign or in his sign of exaltation, if occupying the first, fourth, seventh or tenth house from the ascendant or the Moon constitutes a Mahapurusha Yoga. Mahapurusha means a great man and the angular position of any of these five non-luminaries in an angle, as described above, ensures wealth and a good position in life.

Thus Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn in an angle constitutes Ruchaka Yoga; Mercury in Gemini or Virgo in an angle constitutes Bhadra Yoga; Jupiter in an angle in Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces constitutes Hansa Yoga; Venus in Taurus, Libra or Pisces in an angle constitutes Malavya Yoga; Saturn in Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius constitutes Shasha Yoga. These are five independent Yogas comprised by Mahapurusha Yoga.

If three or more planets are in exaltation, the native becomes a king. Similar is the result if five planets are in their own signs. But if the malefics are strong, the native would be cruel; if benefics are strong, the native would be of a benevolent nature.

If the Sun is in Aries, Moon in Taurus and Saturn in Aquarius and one of these in the ascendant, it is a Raja Yoga. The native occupies a high position.

If Mercury is in Gemini, Jupiter in Leo, and Mars in Scorpio and one of them is in the ascendant, the same effects as in (3) above.

If Saturn and Moon be exalted and one of them is in the ascendant and the Sun and Mercury are in Virgo, Mars in Aries, Jupiter in Cancer and Venus in Libra, this combination constitutes a powerful Raja Yoga.

If the Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, all the four are in their respective signs of exaltation and one of these four is in the ascendant, it constitutes a Raja Yoga of a high order.

The Yoga given in (6) above is also caused when instead of the four planets above named, only three are in their respective signs of exaltation and one of them is in the ascendant. Same result as in (6) above but in lesser measure.

The yoga in (6) above is also formed if instead of the four planets above-named only tow are in their respective signs of exaltation and one of them is in the ascendant and the Moon is in Cancer. Same result as in (5) above materialise.

Note: By permutation and combination, (6), (7) and (8) will give rise to sixteen types of birth charts.

Yogas-Combinations of Planets

If the lord of the ninth and Venus be in their own signs or in their respective signs of exaltation and posited in the first, fourth, fifth, seventh, ninth or tenth house, it is called Lakshmi Yoga. The native is wealthy and enjoys a luxurious life. If the lord of the sign, occupied by the lord of the ascendant is in his own sign or sign of exaltation in an angle or trine from the ascendant it constitutes a Yoga. The native is powerful, rich and owns lands. He is much respected. Suppose X is the sign on the ascendant and A is the lord of the sign. Now A is posited in sin Y and B is the lord of sign Y. Now suppose B occupies the sign Z and C is the lord of sing Z. Then if the planet C is in an angle or trine from the ascendant, in his own sign or sign of exaltation, the resultant Yoga is called Kahala. The native is very rich, benevolent, and wealthy. If exalted Moon is in the ascendant and the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn are respectively in the fourth, seventh and tenth houses the native will no doubt becomes a king. If Saturn in Capricorn is in the ascendant, the Moon in Pisces, Mars in Gemini. Mercury in Virgo, Jupiter in Sagittarius, the native becomes a king. If Mars be in Capricorn, Jupiter in Sagittarius and if Mercury in Virgo is in the ascendant, or if Venus in Pisces is in the ascendant, the native becomes a king. If exalted Jupiter is in the ascendant, the Moon, Mercury and Venus are in Taurus, and the Sun in Aries, the native is very courageous and becomes a king. If the Moon in Pisces is in the ascendant, Saturn in Aquarius, Mars in Capricorn, and the Sun in Leo, the native becomes a ruler. If Mars in Aries is in the ascendant and Jupiter in Cancer, the native is endowed with many qualities and becomes a ruler. If exalted Jupiter is in the ascendant and Mars in Aries is in the tenth, same results as in (17) above are expected. If Saturn in Capricorn is in the ascendant, Mars in Aries, the Moon in Cancer, Sun in Leo, Mercury in Virgo, and Venus in Libra, the native becomes a mighty king. If Mercury in Virgo is in the ascendant, the Sun in Leo, Venus in Gemini, Moon and Jupiter in the seventh, Mars and Saturn in the fifth, the native becomes a king. Even one planet exalted in the ascendant conjoined with a friend and aspected by a friend, makes one wealthy.

Yogas-Combinations of Planets

If five or more planets are exalted or in their own signs and are in angles, the native though born in their own signs and are in angles, the native though born in an ordinary family becomes a king or equal to a king or holds an equally eminent position. Note: While judging 15 and 16 above please examine that there is no evil Yoga or Yogas and the planets are not combust.

Yogas are important combinations in Vedic Astrology. Yogas are formed by planets

being angular and well posited. There are 5 main Great Yogas called Mahapurusha

Yogas, effectuated by Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.

There are 5 main Yogas and there are other minor Yogas. In V A , there are 6 lakh

Yogas.

Angular and powerful Jupiter ( either exalted or in own house ) causes Hamsa Yoga.

Angular and powerful Saturn ( either exalted or in own house ) causes Sasa Yoga.

Angular and powerful Mars ( either exalted or in own house ) causes Ruchaka Yoga.

Angular and powerful Venus ( either exalted or in own house ) causes Malavya Yoga.

Angular and powerful Mercury ( either exalted or in own house ) causes Bhadra Yoga.

If the planet which causes the Yoga is debiliated in Navamsa, then that Yoga gets weakened.

If the planet which causes the Yoga is combust, or helpless in a cuspal degree, that Yoga is

nullified. Great care must be exercised while interpreting Yogas.

When a debilitated planet attains cancellation of debilitation, he becomes positve and gives rise to Neechabhanga Raja Yoga. The clauses for N R Y are

The dispositor of the debilitated planet must be angular, either to the Ascendant or to the Lunar Ascendant or the exaltation dispositor should be angular, either to the Asc or the Lunar Asc. ( Tad Rasi natha Tad api Uchanatha/ Sa Lagna Chandreshvapi Kendravarthi )

The native born in N R Y becomes attains regal status and will be righteous ( Raja Bhaveth Dharmika

Chakravarthi ).

Raja Yogas are regal Yogas formed when some powerful planets become angular. 16 types of Raja Yogas are formed when Jupiter, Saturn become exalted, Moon is in own house and all are angular.

HAMSA MAHA YOGA

According to the classical texts the person becomes a king extolled by the good ( Artha Dharma Sukhabhak ), will eat pure food & will be of righteous disposition. Jupiter is the planet of Religion & the person not only becomes religious but revives true Religion. ( Guru Dwija Bhakthiadhi Tad Yoga Phalam ). Wealth, righteousness, comforts, devotion

to preceptors, beautiful voice, fame and liberality - these are some of the characteristics of Hamsa Yoga. High longevity is also conferred by this yoga. ( Hamsaja Sura Suraschiranjeevi ).

SASHA MAHA YOGA

The native will be well liked by all, equivalent to a king or a

minister and is tough- hearted. This yoga is excellent for

careers in police and military. They will enjoy all the plea-

sures of life. On the negative side this yoga indicates a

voluptuary inclined to play the role of paramour towards the

objects of his guilty love. They may be considered wicked by

RUCHAKA MAHA YOGA

People born under this yoga become famous & become

GAJAKESARI YOGA

Angular Jupiter, angular to the Moon confers Gaja Kesari Yoga.

" Sahasra Masecha Jeevitham " meaning that they will live

upto 1000 lunar months. Minimum longevity 70 / 80 years. Will have

tremendous oratorial capacity which can move audiences as a

monarch sways his dominions. They will be the leader of their

place, reputed and famous. Uninterrupted influx of income.

ADHI YOGA

Adhi Yoga results when the lunar 6th, 7th and 8th positions

are occupied by major planets. The result of this yoga is

wealth and fame. They will be the leaders wherever they are

placed. They will be above want.

VESI YOGA

When the solar 2nd is tenanted by major planets, Vesi Yoga

VASI YOGA
